Embracing the Semicolon
Overcoming limiting beliefs often starts with recognizing where we have placed unnecessary full stops in our lives. In writing, the semicolon connects two related ideas. One of my favorite descriptions is that it is “it’s a stronger break than a comma but softer stop than a period.”
In other words, the story does not end there!
In life, we often use periods at the end of our thoughts. Full stops. Statements that close the door to possibility, preventing us from moving forward. Over time these thoughts can become barriers to our dreams because we believe that it is the only answer, the only truth.
Here are examples I hear in my coaching sessions:
- I am not qualified for this promotion.
- Retirement is the only answer.
- My colleagues are not supportive.
Each sentence has a period. A full stop. The idea ends or dies there.
Now imagine replacing the period with a semicolon. Instead of ending the thought, you allow it to continue. The semicolon becomes a bridge to possibilities.
Using the semicolon the statements become more open and allow for another option.
- I am not qualified for this promotion; I am ready for a complex project to demonstrate my abilities.
- Retirement is the only answer; what I need to pursue is a passion project.
- My colleagues are not supportive; let me identify my allies.
The semicolon allows you space to continue the story rather than ending it too soon.
Take a few minutes and reflect on where you are using periods or full stops, in your own thinking. Where have you created a full stop?
Now ask yourself, where can you use the semicolon to open the door to another possibility?
Once you have rewritten your statement, notice how it feels. Try it on and hold it close for a moment then consider:
What has shifted?
What might now be in your control?
I would love to partner with you to explore those possibilities with you. I invite you to book a discovery call. It would be my honor to walk alongside you.
Warmly,
Janette

A semicolon is used when a sentence could have been ended,
but it wasn’t.
